# 1:1 ABA therapy for children in Brampton

In one-on-one ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis) therapy, your child works with one trained therapist on goals you chose together. A Registered Behaviour Analyst (RBA) assesses your child, writes the plan and supervises every session. Sessions run at our Brampton centre six days a week and are eligible for Ontario Autism Program (OAP) funding.

## What a session looks like

Your child and their therapist work on a handful of goals at a time. Each skill is broken into small steps and practised through games, books, snacks, toys and routines your child already likes. When your child uses a new skill, something good follows: praise, a turn with a favourite toy, a game they love. That makes the skill more likely to show up again.

The therapist writes down what happened after every session, for example how many times your child asked for help using words. Your child’s RBA looks at that data regularly and changes the plan when something isn’t working.

## What children work on

- **Communication.** Asking for things, answering questions, following instructions, having a conversation. With words, signs, pictures or a device.
- **Play and social skills.** Looking at the same thing as someone else, sharing, taking turns, playing next to and then with other children.
- **Everyday independence.** Toilet training, getting dressed, mealtimes, brushing teeth, bedtime.
- **Getting ready for school.** Sitting for an activity, copying actions, matching and early academic skills.
- **Coping.** Handling transitions, waiting and frustration, and swapping behaviours like hitting or running off for safer ways to communicate.

## Who it’s for

We work with children and teens, including autistic children and children with other developmental or behavioural needs. Some families come to us right after an autism diagnosis. Others come because a daycare, teacher or doctor has mentioned concerns about speech or behaviour. Starting early helps, and older children and teens make progress too, so we plan around your child’s age and goals.

## How many hours of ABA therapy will my child need?

It depends on your child’s goals. Your RBA will recommend a schedule after the assessment.

For reference, the Council of Autism Service Providers (CASP) practice guidelines describe two common models. **Focused** programs work on a smaller set of goals, often 10 to 25 hours a week. **Comprehensive** programs cover many areas of development, often 30 to 40 hours a week. Many children start with fewer hours and adjust as they go. We schedule sessions Monday to Friday 9 AM to 6 PM and Saturday 9 AM to 3 PM.

## Who supervises my child’s therapy?

A Registered Behaviour Analyst. Since July 1, 2024, behaviour analysis has been a regulated profession in Ontario, and only members of the College of Psychologists and Behaviour Analysts of Ontario (CPBAO) can use the title “Registered Behaviour Analyst”. You can look up any clinician on the [CPBAO public register](https://cpbao.ca/). Day-to-day sessions are delivered by therapists the RBA trains and supervises.

## How we work

- We start from what your child is good at and what they enjoy.
- You help choose the goals, and they focus on things that make daily life easier.
- We teach your child what to do instead, rather than only what to stop doing.
- You get regular updates and [parent training](https://serviceswithoakridge.com/services/parent-training/), so skills carry over at home.

## Paying for ABA therapy

Our ABA therapy is eligible for Ontario Autism Program funding. Families also use workplace benefits, Special Services at Home and tax credits. The [funding guide](https://serviceswithoakridge.com/ontario-autism-program-funding/) explains each option, and we’re happy to go through it at your visit.

## Questions about 1:1 ABA therapy

### What does an ABA therapy session look like?

A typical session mixes short, structured teaching with play. The therapist works on a few goals at a time using activities and rewards your child enjoys, and records progress so the supervising RBA can adjust the plan.

### Is ABA therapy only for children with autism?

No. ABA is best known as a support for autistic children, but the same principles help children with other developmental, communication or behavioural needs. We work with children with and without an autism diagnosis.

### How soon will we see progress?

Every child is different. Many families notice small changes in the first few weeks, like smoother routines or a new way of asking for something. Your RBA reviews measurable progress with you regularly, so you can see exactly what is changing.

### How are parents involved in ABA therapy?

Parents are part of the team. You help choose your child’s goals, get regular progress updates, and take part in parent training with an RBA so you can use the same strategies at home. Ask about watching a session at your free visit.
