Why breaks matter
Caring for a child with extra needs is rewarding, and it is also a lot. Regular breaks give parents time to rest, run errands, be with siblings or just sit down, which makes the long run more manageable. Respite care means you can take that time knowing your child is safe and busy with people who understand them.
What your child does
- Structured play and activities picked around their interests
- Practice with everyday skills like communication, turn-taking and self-care
- A predictable routine in a calm room
- Time with staff who know ABA strategies and your child’s plan
Paying for respite care
Ontario’s Special Services at Home (SSAH) program helps eligible families pay for respite and skill-building for a child with a developmental or physical disability. Some families also use Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities (ACSD). See the funding guide or ask us at your visit.
